Armour 03:29
We feel it before we wake up. It’s there when we close our eyes. All of things we traded For a fortress to stay alive. You know every stone I placed was to build a life for you. On our bodies we wear armour. we can’t tell where one ends. throw it off and we’d go farther But there’s no place we can begin There’s no amount of damage that we can’t withstand. We are not made to be broken even by our own hands. You know every stone I placed was to build a life for you. On our bodies we wear armour. we can’t tell where one ends. throw it off and we’d go farther But there’s no place we can begin All of the deals we made In places we can hide. All of the victories won on the battle field the inside. You know every stone I placed was to build a life for you. You know every stone I placed was to build a life for you. On our bodies we wear armour. we can’t tell where one ends. throw it off and we’d go farther But there’s no place we can begin

The fever stays away most of the time Until it doesn’t and I fall out of line. I want to live like this,I want to live like this, I want to live like this all the time. I hear them calling from all around. The beasts of wanting say “let me out” It has it’s way of of finding me. I could stay underground, but I want to sing. I want to live like this,I want to live like this, I want to live like this all the time. I hear them calling from all around. The beasts of wanting say “let me out” So let’s take a chance and scream at the wind. Without your call my life’s not worth a thing. I want to live like this,I want to live like this, I want to live like this all the time. I hear them calling from all around. The beasts of wanting say “let me out”

There will be no miracles when our bodies rise up. It’s written across the sky we will find a way up. We’re hungry. We’re hungry. We’re hungry. We’re hungry. There’s nothing spiritual about holding our empty cups. Our screams will split lightening And bring on the flood. We’re hungry. We’re hungry. We’re hungry. We’re hungry. There is no glory in a forest of doubt. We’re waiting for a call and then we will claw our way out. We’re hungry. We’re hungry. We’re hungry. We’re hungry.
4.
Leave my body broken in half. There is nothing left to mend. Somethings happen you can’t take back. Some things can’t go right again. Can’t go right. Can’t go right again. Can’t go right. Can’t go right again. Your prayers are filling the sky and falling sideways down And covering up my roof and blowing all around. There is no end in sight as you keep on throwing them high and they arc through the night and fall back to the ground. Can’t go right. Can’t go right again. Can’t go right. Can’t go right again. We are fighting a battle that no one can win. And killing off the ground that we have in common. I have told you over and over that I know who I am. If you don’t believe me we are way past the last stand. Can’t go right. Can’t go right again. Can’t go right. Can’t go right again.

I asked the stars to pull away time. I asked the stars. They said no, no, no They said no,no,no I’ve got a friend who wrestles with death. She pulled me out when I was a mess. told me that the moves aren’t already set. So I wrote my way away the edge. I asked the sky to blow out my light. I asked the sky. It said no, no, no It said no,no,no I’ve got a friend who sleeps with mercy. I don’t know why she would have picked me. She taught me how to stay still so that our minds don’t go for the kill. I asked the sea To swallow me. I asked the sky. It said no, no, no It said no,no,no I’ve got a friend who wrestles with death. She pulled me out when I was a mess. told me that the moves aren’t already set. So I wrote my way away the edge. I’ve got a friend who sleeps with mercy. I don’t know why she would have picked me. She taught me how to stay still so that our minds don’t go for the kill.

Stolen Song 04:14
If you grew up in a nothing town where they sing the same song in every house. Then I can see what made you so hungry to stick up, to stand out to be set apart, to make a sound. To be someone new in the big city. You can try it on but you can take it off and that’s why it doesn’t belong to you. It’s a stolen song. I you grew up in a nothing town where they sing the same song in every house. That’s what made me so hungry to stick up, to stand out to be set apart, to make a sound. To be someone new in the big city. I could try it on but I could take it off and that’s why it doesn’t belong to me. It’s a stolen song. It’s a stolen song.

Blue is the colour and the sound when I chase myself around. I can’t sit still and I can’t stay down. So I go another round. When I hear them call from the deep I know that the beast is me. Orange is the sky in the morning when I wonder if I’ll ever sing again. Then I find out every night It’s the only way I fight. When I hear them call from the deep I know that the beast is me. Gray is sound of the quiet When all I want are fireworks. To come and blow the night away When there’s no one left to blame. When I hear them call from the deep I know that the beast is me. When I hear them call from the deep I know that the beast is me.

Flood 03:39
All my armour falls at one word. Fortress crumbles in your name. You come out of nowhere and bring on the flood. I will swim for you if that’s what you want. What is between us if you aren’t out for blood? I will bleed for you if that’s what you want. Sing for all that has been stolen. Bodies broken are still perfect. You come out of nowhere and bring on the flood. I will swim for you if that’s what you want. What is between us if you aren’t out for blood? I will bleed for you if that’s what you want. What is calling will not kill us. Break the dam and make a new world. You come out of nowhere and bring on the flood. I will swim for you if that’s what you want. What is between us if you aren’t out for blood? I will bleed for you if that’s what you want.
9.
Show me the place where you lay in wait. Where do you go when you’re hungry? It’s not enough to stand beside love. Make it a part of your body. Go for the kill, kill, kill, kill I will make it easy. Now that I know know know know I live so you can chase me. Show me the place where all light will fail. Where you become disembodied. It’s not enough to reach for a touch. You have become what your longing. Go for the kill, kill, kill, kill I will make it easy. Now that I know know know know I live so you can chase me. Show me the place where buried your name. Where do you go when you’re wounded? It’s not enough break even with love. The losing is part of the giving. Go for the kill, kill, kill, kill I will make it easy. Now that I know know know know I live so you can chase me.
10.
I will wear your grandmother’s ring Aand try again at everything. I do not trust the ground, but I float above it when you’re around. I would not have believed when I failed life and it failed me. That I could find a family when I thought it was so out of reach. We both want to stay free. To let forests grow and storms on seas and wildness which is everything. if it’s true to you then it’s true to me. I will wear your grandmother’s ring and try again at everything. I do not trust the ground, but I float above it when you’re around.

about

Rae Spoon has been called one of Canada’s best songwriters and their new album Armour does not disappoint. The ten new songs hold all of the lyrical depth indicative of Spoon’s compositions while showcasing their distinctive voice. Armour’s self-produced enigmatic soundscapes blur the lines between organic and electronic instruments. Analogue synthesizers, electronic drum programming, drum kits, percussion, electric bass, cello and guitar carry the album through pop refrains and danceable beats. Released by Coax Records, the album is the result of collaboration with Calgary’s Lorrie Matheson at Arch Audio Studios and features electronic arrangements by Berlin’s Alexandre Decoupigny.

Armour, Spoon’s eighth solo album, is the highly anticipated follow-up to Polaris Prize– nominated My Prairie Home, a musical about Spoon’s fraught childhood in Alberta. As much as My Prairie Home was about Spoon’s upbringing as a queer youth in a Pentecostal household, Armour is about their view of the future. Moments of reckoning with trauma and self-preservation mingle with messages of hope and survival. Armour explores the idea that there is no instruction manual for healthy adulthood, asserting that the attempt to construct meaning is itself the point of life. Armour is a tribute to the intimate space where both hope and despair have space to share the same voice.
